Hello, All You People Out There!

It has been three months since my last post. Eek! I guess you could say I took the summer off. It has just been so busy.

Last month my hubby and I moved from Virginia to Utah for a few months and then we're back off to Virginia at the end of the year. If you have ever seen my studio at its worst, you'll know that I had a big job ahead of me when I set out to pack it up. I think that took at least two of the months of my summer blogging break. Okay, maybe not that long. But it was certainly a task!

I am definitely happy to be in Utah for a bit. I have a nice space to create in while I am here and I am soo excited to be getting ready for the holidays. There are lots of interesting items waiting to be made. Halloween decor is well under way! I've made lots of spooky bottle brush trees and wreaths and need to take photos to post here on my blog. I don't even know where my camera is! Don't you love the disarray of moving?

And here's some sad news - Snow Days is off! :) There just wasn't enough support to get it off its feet but it's definitely still a possibility for a coming year. The idea is just too much fun to let go. Cross your fingers for next year, people!

Here's another day to creating! Oooh, have you ever been to a store called the Paper Source? They also have an online shop you need to check out. I just love their motto: "Do something creative every day."

Finally! I have to give a shout out thank-you to Shar from Bags That Fit because she motivated me to get the Utah Snow Days website up and running in a timely manner. It's now much better than the "Coming Soon" page!

So, all you gals (and fellas), go to UtahSnowDays.com to take a look and tell me what you think! I have to toot my own horn just a bit here because I did all of the designing and building ON MY OWN! I am proud of myself for making myself learn how to make a web page that actually works. Oh - and look at the little icon on the left side of the URL while you are on the page. I figured out how to do that little baby too!OK, you'll notice that all of the pages aren't totally done because I still have a few things to figure out and more commitments to get for the participating stores, but those will come soon.

Snow Days is getting closer and we're getting excited!

Something Pretty

For a long time I've just been wanting to create something "pretty". Perhaps the warm and bright weather is inspiring me to create something light and cheery!

On a recent trip through the Carolinas and on through Georgia, I picked up some fun mixed media materials including these antique bottles. Many of them came from Savannah. I then added bits and pieces like vintage lace, jewelry baubles, millinery and ribbons. Now a couple are for sell in my shop! The rest, plus many more, were sent to my accounts in Utah. Let me know if you'd like specifics on where they are located!

Take a look at the new items that are now available for wholesale and retail!

German Glass Glitter has inspired me to come up with several new products for Easter. I can't wait to show you because Easter is right around the corner!

Mmm . . . This was my first glass glittered creation. It's an egg box with tiny pleated pages from an antique book and a touch of pink seam binding. They come in these pretty colors: silver (shown), pink, light green, and light blue.

These glittered egg ornaments are already selling in my Etsy shop and I've had several wholesale orders already. Again, tiny paper pleats and seam binding for hanging. They're perfect to hang on your Easter tree!

The mini glittered eggs come packaged with this French vintage book shred. So adorable! The eggs come in pink, silver, green, blue & gold. All the ideal Easter shades.

And these trees are just perfect for Easter. One of my customers had this to comment about these hand dyed and embellished Bottle Brush Trees: "The trees are just perfect and exactly as described. Just beautiful!" They come in pink, light green, aqua & cream. Little glittered eggs, pearls, and mica flakes are added for the final touch.

Spring, Spring, Spring . . .

. . . Is almost here! The Daffodils, Dogwoods, and Forsythia will all be blooming soon. It's the perfect reward for enduring a long and dark winter, don't you think?

While you're waiting for your beautiful landscape to reappear, here's a list of ideas I've compiled to help ward off those Winter blues:

Wear red. If you're like me, the color of choice for the cold season is black. But there are so many great colors in style this season that will bring out your bright side. Red, bright blue, & purple are all in!
Take a hike. Or just a little walk. Getting your blood pumping through your legs will bring color to your cheeks and a boost to your creativity while clearing your head. I should probably take my own advice on this one.

Spring clean early. You'll be ready to enjoy the weather if you get to your Spring cleaning a little early. My advice would be to pick one day of the week to dedicate just one hour of deep cleaning. Starting from your top floor and working your way down to the basement, take one room (or floor if you have time!) and clean for one hour. Keep focused and don't stop until the hour is up. Set a timer to motivate you!

Add a little color to your surroundings. Though it's just bhech outside, it doesn't have to be the same inside. Bring home some fresh flowers from the grocery store to enjoy throughout the week. Try taking big, brigh blossoms and arranging them in a short vase to set on the table to enjoy during meals.

Be inspired. Just looking at pretty photos of Spring can bring something warm to your heart. Take a look at this flickr search of Spring Flowers. However, don't get carried away and look at all 553,513 images!

Tutorial: Make a Giant Heart Valentine!

This year, give your Valentine something special! A Giant Heart Valentine. Handmade items are always treasured and this one can be saved from year to year!

This is my first tutorial on my blog, so enjoy!

Materials needed for the Giant Heart Valentine:
Tissue paper or large piece of newspaper
Scissors
Pen or pencil
Poster board
Tulle in pink or red
Decorative paper
Glittered letters
Seam binding or other ribbon
Paper medallions or other decorative elements
Ribbon for hanging
Hot glue
Glue stick

1. First, trace a large heart on a piece of tissue paper or newspaper. It’s easiest if you fold the paper in half and draw half a heart along the crease of the paper and cut it out with the fold still intact. Make sure your heart is big enough; 18 - 22 inches works well. Trim as needed.

2. Trace the heart pattern twice onto poster board and cut out the two hearts.

3. Cover one of the hearts with your desired paper. I chose vintage sheet music.

4. Turn the heart face down and gather tulle and glue it around the edge of the heart with hot glue. Just work it a little at a time!

5. Glue the other heart on the back of the papered heart, sandwiching the tulle between the two. Hot glue works great for this as well.

6. Embellish your Valentine as desired. I put on some gold paper lace and red seam binding, then I just added glittered letters that spell out “I LOVE YOU”

but you can put on any phrase you’d like.

I also attached the letters to some paper medallions covered in mica flakes.

Tip: Arrange your letters how you’d like them on the heart before gluing in place to get them evenly spaced.

7. Punch two holes in the top of the heart and thread ribbon through for hanging.

8. Write a special note to your honey and sign and date it. Give it to your sweetheart!

Now, get to work and surprise your special someone.
I've already had requests for three more of these!

Time for a Rest!

Meet my little friend. He's cuddly and he's cute, but he sure does like to get in the way of things! My cat, Butty, absolutely loves to come and take a nap right in my work area. Why, oh why, does he do this?

I decided to take some photos on different days to demonstrate his friendliness. Notice how he is in pretty much the same spot every time!

I personally don't like to lounge or nap on scissors, wire cutters, glitter or ribbon. But Butty sure doesn't seem to mind!

I think I'll sign off and take my own little cat nap. The icy rain outside certainly doesn't warrant any work to go on inside, right?

Valentine's Day Projects

I couldn't wait to share my latest Valentine's projects with you. I haven't had this much fun crafting in a long time! First of all, look at this fun L-O-V-E garland. I've been wanting to make something like this for such a long time and it finally happened. Large cupcake wrappers, tulle, crepe paper, and mica flakes are a few of the ingredients of this lovely confection. I put it up on Etsy in case it wants to find a permanent home.

Then I made up these little tussie mussies. I had done a number for Christmas and I sent them to my mom to show her and she ended up buying the whole lot for herself. Hopefully I can spread the love a little wider this holiday. Tussie mussies are a great alternative to the regular old gift bag. A small token or favorite Valentine treat would fit perfectly amidst the excelsior.

Mica flakes, rhinestones, seam binding and neat paper - some of my favorite mediums! Each even has its own coordinating tag for a personal message.

Back Into the Swing of Things

You know how when you haven't blogged for so long it suddenly seems difficult to type a few lines to let your friends know how you are doing? That's what I think has been happening to me anyway. I'm glad to be back!

The holidays seemed very extended this year and it feels great to get back into the swing of things. Time to get to work! I've been busy creating some exciting things for Valentine's Day and I'm excited to share them with you. Photos are coming soon.

Here's some exciting news that I probably could have shared quite some time ago: my Marie Antoinette Faux cake that I posted about for the Marie Antoinette Birthday Soiree is going to be featured in Stampington & Comopany's one-time publication, Marie Antoinette, due out this Spring! And not only will it be featured in the publication, but also in the Spring 2009 issue of Artful Blogging. Yay! Here's a photo:

And that's not all! I just did an interview for Utah Valley Magazine and I'm going to be in an upcoming issue featuring 50 people in that area (or from that area) that are on the move with their businesses. Exciting! 2009 is going to be a year full of celebrations, I can tell already!

Giveaway for Martha Stewart Show Anniversary!

It's almost one year since I appeared on the Martha Stewart Show demonstrating one of my faux dessert techniques. Because that day, December 7, 2007, was such a jumping-off point for Jenni B Originals, I've decided to have my very first giveaway in celebration of the first anniversary of this event.

Because this experience was so special to me, I want to give away something UNBELIEVABLE! Some have heard the story of how when I went to New York City to be on the show, the producers told me to bring as much product as possible to showcase. When Martha saw the set decorated with my things she was in love! During the commercial break between the segments I was on, she asked if I'd be willing to let her take all of the cakes (pictured behind us on the set) and some of the ornaments home with her to photograph for an upcoming book (of which I'm not sure is published yet). What do you think I said? "Yes!", of course! So she had these things of mine in her possession for a few weeks until her personal assistant got them shipped back to me!

So why did I tell you this story? Because for this giveaway, I'm going to give THREE lucky winners one of the EXACT (not a copy!) ornaments Martha took home with her and touched with her own Queen of Crafting hands! Isn't this going to be fun?

Now I have to say, these ornaments do not have a hanger of any type attached. They are just as the producers of the show left them. You can see they displayed the treats on a cookie sheet. This image is a screenshot taken from the show!

Colonial Williamsburg Inspiration

I grew up in the Western United States and since living on the East Coast, I've noticed some major differences. Well, of course there's the humidity, the usually fair Autumn weather, the southern accents and the confederate fanatics. But there's also a bit of a difference in Holiday decoration.

Last Thanksgiving weekend, I visited Colonial Williamsburg and was so enamored with the Christmas decorations on every single window and door. Fresh apples, citrus fruits, greenery and ribbons made up the most beautiful wreaths and hangings. I was so inspired that I purchased a book over the summer, "Christmas Decorations from Williamsburg". It's chock full of gorgeous photos, instructions for probably a hundred decorative items, and recipes. It's so much fun to look through!

Since I'm just getting in the Christmas mood, I wanted to share some of these fun holiday decorations with you. Maybe I think they're so attractive because they remind me of the simpler times when Christmas wasn't a commercial holiday.

This style isn't unique to Williamsburg, but has spread throughout the state as well. I just got back from a day of making Boxwood wreaths for a nearby Country Club. It was such a fun time! And last night I was with a women's group and we put together centerpieces for our holiday tables with fresh greens. My dear adopted mother here is an expert florist!

Newfound Friend!

Has there ever been a boutique that you found on the internet that you want to visit so badly that it hurts? I found one of those!

Through my little blogging world, I came up on the Mari Robeson Style blog and just fell in love! Then I realized that this is the same Mari that has been featured in many, many magazines including my favorite, Romantic Homes. She and her boutique were featured in the "Shop Keeper's" section in May of this year. I had seen a gorgeous photo of her boutique and wished I didn't live on the opposite side of the country as her Arroyo Grande, California store location.

Anyhow, I came upon her blog and commented on one of her fun entries. Then, before I knew it, she was contacting me to see if she could purchase my products wholesale to sale in her boutique! Needless to say, I didn't hesitate a bit. We spoke for a few minutes over the phone and she was such a kind, fun person. We instantly connected! (I love it when that happens!)

Happy 253rd Birthday, Ms. Antoinette!

I am honored to be joining many, many of my friends from Cupid's Charm for this fabulous Marie Antoinette Birthday Soiree. Let me share with you the "Let Them Eat Cake" cake, designed especially for this event!

I traveled all the way to France to gather relics to adorn this cake ode to Mademoiselle Marie on her special day. These chandelier crystals were taken from the famed Hall of Mirrors in Versailles, Queen Marie Antoinette's home outside of Paris. Pages of vintage French text were hand cut and attached to the sides. These pages could, perhaps, be actual words of Marie but since I cannot read French they very well may be about bugs and insects. And yards of ribbon from Marie Antoinette's favorite ball gown were removed and carefully recrafted to grace her 253rd Birthday Cake. If you have read through the end of this paragraph, you'll know that this description has definitely been fictionalized!

Marie Antoinette's famous words, "Let Them Eat Cake" had to be on the cake somewhere! They are placed across the pennant on the top of the cake. Frivolity was was one of the things Marie Antoinette did the best and that's what was in mind as I created this confection. Glitter, tinsel, lace, jewels, ribbon, rhinestones...

New Items Added to My Shop!

I've been so busy working away in my little studio and am so excited to present to you my latest creations! It's no secret that cupcakes are at the top of my list when it comes to likes. So it should be no surprise that my new Holiday line had to include them. And here they are.Topped with lots and lots of glass glitter, these sisters sure do shimmer!

And not only have cupcakes been a-baking, but new glittery garlands have been in the making! A few posts ago I showed pictures of my new power tools and now you finally get to see what I was using them to create. Each of these vintage postcard images was mounted to a thin piece of wood with vintage book pages on the back.

These garlands and cards are so much fun to make and have been giving me a little break (which was much needed) from faux desserts. I'm thinking it might be extra, extra fun to give one as a GIVEAWAY in an upcoming post, so stay tuned!

Since I have been using so much of that wonderful seam binding and have really fallen in love wiht it, I've decided to offer it in my shop for sale so all of you can get in on this great ribbon if you don't own some of it yourself already. I finally have something really good to blog about! This past week marks the finish of my very first actual teaching course of Jenni B Originals Faux Desserts. The course was a community education class here in Charlottesville and these ladies and I had SO much fun together! The class was two weeks and take a look at the projects they took home!

This was a cute mother and daughter. That little one was so creative!

I had a great time teaching this class but I think it was because my students were gems. They were all so excited and eager to learn and had creative minds. I can't wait to do it all again!

It was high time that I got a makeover for my blog. I was so tired of the same boring old brownie. It's only been up for a year. Now it's time for cupcakes!

...The newest Jenni B Original creation!

Take a look at this fun altered art faux cake! I think I had more fun creating this cake than any faux dessert I have ever made. And I've made a lot of desserts!

I know you think this cake looks neat, but wait until you hear about this surprise: all of the images and the colored ribbons are interchangeable and it's a cake for all Holidays! Mini postcard images can be switched out for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine's Day, Easter, and the Fourth of July. There are even birthday pictures so you can change the pictures when someone special has a birthday coming up.

The parts of the cake are so DETAILED. I think that's why I had a lot of fun creating it. Each removable image has a nice back side with a little velcro that keeps it in place. All of the images have tiny tinsel around the edge. And I even included 2 extra images for each holiday so you can pick your favorites! See that pennant on the top of the cake? The images (one is in the back) are even reversible there and you can put any one you want in those spots! You can't really tell in the pictures very well, but each little photo card (the cake comes with 70!) has glitter accents in two colors. And get this - the entire top of the cake is removable so you can take it off for storage (but you'll NEVER want to put this thing away!).

The cake isn't totally finished yet, either. On the bottom layer of the cake, I have yet to attach the faux icing top knots with silver dragees (fake, of course) to some of the scallops. I was just too excited to wait any longer before posting about this beauty.

The cake itself measures 8" in height, and then with the topper it ends up being about 14" tall. I just think it would be the cutest decoration for your front entry. And it will be so much fun decorating it with all of the ribbons and picture cards included for every Holiday.

Lately I've been busy in the kitchen studio making something QUITE different than faux confections. Check these out:

I wanted to do something a little out of the ordinary for me so I've been buying up composition notebooks here and there. And I came up with some fun things! They're for sale in my Etsy shop for $16 (pretty reasonable to start - I want to see how they do). Vintage seam binding, sheet music, pearls, buttons & images are just some of the items I've been getting addicted to lately. Is it just me or do other creative people feel like they go through crafting "phases" where you just can't stick to one thing for long? Please comment!

And check this out! It's my new FAVORITE toy! I went to Lowe's to find a jigsaw to cut out some wood projects I've been working on (I'll post pics of that secret project later!) and found this one on clearance for $34.50 (it is normally $50). And since it was the floor model, they gave it to me for only $20! Sweet! You should have seen the three guys at Lowe's helping me out with what I needed. They sure thought I was crazy! So I got all of the supplies I needed and went home to have a hey day of working with the saw. And let me tell you - I had sawdust from hell to breakfast! (an old expression from my mom - who, by the way, taught me all about these tools)

Then after I used the saw, I pulled out my drill to finish the secret, secret project. OK...so it's no secret, but I just forgot to take pictures of it before I shipped it off to the shop (Finders Keepers in American Fork, Utah). Darn! Why do I do that? I'll just have to make more and take pictures then.
I love my power tools. Who says they're just for guys? I demand a challenge if you say they are!

I just got an email from an editor at Brides.com. She was letting me know that my faux mini cupcake place card holders are in an article feature! Check out the article. You have to click on the "Next" button at the bottom of the page to get to mine. They're the second feature.

A couple of weeks ago the editor contacted me asking about pricing and some photographs and of course I was MORE than willing to provide her with what she needed for the article. It's an article all about cupcakes for brides and some different ideas with cupcakes than just the typical "Cupcakes as a wedding cake" idea.

OK, now it's back to making cupcakes. I just got a huge cupcake order for The English Rose Tea Room in Carefree, Arizona. A pleasant English woman gave me a call after I sent her some information regarding my faux desserts. She'll have her faux cupcakes available for sale at her tea room/shop in October. September Has Arrived

One of my favorite people in the world kindly reminded me that it is now September and a blog entry on JenniBOriginals.blogspot.com is way overdue. Sorry, people! I've been neglecting all of my online friends!

The last few weeks have been so busy. That's probably why I haven't gotten to write about anything. Moving, a two-week vacation, and class preparation have all had me running around crazily. But things are finally settling down back to normal (whatever normal may be!).

While I was in Utah, I got to meet a new favorite friend - Brenda from Just a Bed of Roses. She started carrying my faux cupcakes and cakes in her darling shop in Farmington, Utah, so of course I had to visit her - twice! She was so nice and friendly and darling! When I arrived, Brenda presented me with a necklace, complete with a custom pendant that had images of my very own cupcakes. And she even sent me home with lots of complementary goodies. If you live in Utah and have a chance to visit Just a Bed of Roses, do it!! You'll want to come back again and again!

While I was on vacation, I picked up a bunch of supplies to stock up my studio (thanks in part to Brenda, above). Now I have all sorts of new ideas but so little time to actually make them! Isn't that the way it always goes? I am just in the mood for Fall to be here and to cuddle up by the fire with a fun book and a cup of hot chocolate. Hey - maybe that's why I never get anything done!

Ok, so I've never done this kind of post before but I've always wanted to. Thanks to Devonia at Many Shades of Shabby for tagging me! She is an extremely talented artist that I truly admire. And her blog is fun and fresh. She's a fabulous writer!

As a part of being tagged, I get to share 7 things about myself most of you don't know. And then I get to choose 7 people to tag as well. How fun! I believe most of my readers don't know me very well. I hope you find this interesting!

1. I was the proud purchaser of a ROUND bed. Yes, that's right! I really do wish I had a picture of this bed. Next time I am at my mom's (she still owns it!) I will see if I can snap a shot. This thing uses king size bedding and has - get this - a large upholstered/tufted purple velvet headboard. When I saw this vintage bed in college, it HAD to be mine. I only used it for a year or so, but it was lots of fun!

2. One of my favorite things to do is travel. OK, that isn't anything strange. I know. But I really do enjoy seeing new places! Within the past few years I've been to Italy, Spain, Switzerland, France, Germany, England, Monaco, Australia, New Zealand, and Mexico. We're planning a family trip to Costa Rica next Spring and there are lots and lots of other places I want to see: Thailand, the Caribbean, Africa, Ireland, Greece, Morocco, & Turkey.

3. Fluffy clouds are one of my favorite things. A couple of weeks ago I was on a flight and we were flying through the big, fluffy Care Bear-types of clouds. I wanted to just jump out and bounce around on those plush-looking surfaces.

4. Getting wet is one of my least favorite things. I don't like swimming, brushing my teeth, washing my face, taking a shower (yes, I still do it regularly), or doing the dishes. I decided it's because I just don't like water all that much.

5. I have always been a really shy person. Within the last year or so I feel like I've come out of my shell quite a bit, but in the past have just always kept to myself. Believe me, being on live national television had a way of forcing me to face my fears. Overcoming shyness is something I'm working on.

6. Starting my business was something I did out of boredom. I never thought I was a crazily crafty person. But somehow having my own house brought out a need for me to create. My husband has been a law student for the past couple of years and after I got home from my full-time job that first Fall I was terribly bored. Not anymore!

7. I've always wanted to take cake decorating classes. Just thought it sounded fun. I've been making all of these faux desserts for the past year but still haven't gotten around to taking a class. Maybe I will one of these days!

More About Good Things Utah

Okay, so I have been meaning to write more about the last couple of weeks while I was in Utah. But as I mentioned in my last post, my roof caved in while I was away. And the only thing it damaged was my computer! Luckily, the hard drive was perfectly fine so I got a new computer (my husband bought it for me - yay!) and just transferred everything over. Bad deal, but at least I got a new computer to replace the one I've been wanting to replace for a year.

I wanted to share some pictures at the actual set of Good Things Utah and then some of my Dear Lizzie open house. Enjoy!

This is my FAVORITE dessert EVER! My mom and I designed it together. Did I ever tell you she's my secret weapon? That woman is amazingly creative! She doesn't understand why I have to "bake" all the time when we're together, but I can tell you it's because I just love her creative energy! So, without further ado...here's what I call the "Piece de la Resistance". You can't tell very well, but around the bottom there are different quotes about cake. Like "Let them eat cake. --Marie Antoinette". And on the top the pennant says "Have Your Cake and Eat it Too." Then there's just tons of paper that's from an old piano book.

Here's me with my set-up for the craft we're going to make on the show. If you saw the segment (link in post below), you can see that I made the faux tarts with two other ladies. Fun!

I just love the new sugar cookies. Check these out! The top one has the silver balls on top. I think they're called non pareils. And then the pink cake and cupcake tree. Gotta love those!

Good Things Utah Appearance

Good Things Utah was a blast! It was so much fun being in Utah with these fun ladies demonstrating some of my faux cake techniques on live television. You can view my segment! (As promised.) Below is a little image of the show. I know it's not very clear but my photo editing software is on the computer that was crushed under our roof that fell in (eek!) the day after the show...story on that another time! There are also photos of my friends and family that came to watch the show in the studio and they'll be posted later.

Whew! What a week! I absolutely loved the open houses at the businesses that carry my products and had a load of fun meeting people that were interested in the products I make. And helping customers select their own faux cupcakes, cakes and candied apples for their own homes and businesses was a blast! Thanks to all that made this week a success for me and for Jenni B Originals.

Finally, on Friday, I'll be heading over to Scrooge and Marleys in Lehi for a Tea Party! How fun is this? We're even going to be set up outside if the weather is nice. This little party is going to be a terrific kick-off to the Lehi Roundup Days. The shop owner, Donna, is a big supporter of Lehi City and all of the townsfolk. Lots of yummy treats will be served for sure!

The first time I met with Donna to show her my faux chocolate truffles, she just fell in love. This store has a wonderful country feel that carries extremely high quality furnishings. Not only is there furniture, but fabulous gifts for any occasion. My mom and I like to call this place "Scrooge's" for short since we talk about it so much we had to shorten the name. If you're EVER in Lehi, Scrooge's is definitely a must-shop!

This past week I received a custom order for a woman for some faux sugar cookies for a display she's doing with antique pieces. I liked the way they turned out so much that I'm offering them for sale in my shop. The icing color and sprinkles can even be customized!

It's been such a long time since I've been able to just have the time to create something new. It feels quite refreshing, actually. And these little faux cookies make me want to have a bite of the real thing. Enjoy!

Yes, I'm still working!

It's true...I moved! But only for the summer. My hubby and I just relocated up to Northern Virginia for a few months and I'll be back in Charlottesville in September. Of course, I'll be visiting the good ol' C-ville occasionally so I'll be around from time to time.

I've been busy getting back into business after the move last week and am already getting back up to speed. It's easy to forget how much work moving is even when you only need to move your clothes and studio supplies!

All of this makes me so grateful that I have a job where I can move where I need to and work from practically any location. Owning your own business rocks! When we moved, I quit my full-time 9 to 5 job so now I'm only working my other full-time job - the faux dessert business. It's going to be nice having flexibility and more time to put into getting the Jenni B Originals name out there.

I have some REALLY exciting news to share in my next entry but I want to save it. Stay tuned!

Candied Apples - Look But Don't Taste!

Faux Candied Apples

So I just added a new item to my Etsy shop. A faux candied apple! Okay, so it's a fake caramel apple with nuts that looks good enough to eat. I have to keep reminding myself to resist the temptation! And I know this item is really just perfect for Fall decor, but I've been so excited about it I just couldn't wait. I made up quite a few varieties of these last week and had a lot of fun making something different than cupcakes. It's like my life has been overrun with cupcakes the past few months!

These apples (sold in sets of three) are going to be in the Craft Fair Section of The Country Sampler, August/September issue. They'll also be up on their website in July. I'll be sure to post about them again then. But of course, they'll be available for purchase in my shop before then - just because I can't wait until July!

The "Chef Executive Officer" Tells All

I dropped a line to the local newspaper, The Daily Progress, to let them know about my giant faux cupcake order and they wanted to do a write-up. It was featured in today's paper! It turned out to be extremely well done. The author, David Maurer, included some great stories and customer quotes in the article and gives a great overview of my young business.

Also, an update as promised...the big account I made the cupcakes for was Electrolux. They are working with Best Buy and launching a new line of major appliances. Cupcakes, Cupcakes Everywhere!

Ok, so my question is this: Am I in Cupcake Heaven or Cupcake Hell? I'm still trying to decide on how I would answer that!

I just completed an order for over 500 jumbo cupcakes for the upcoming Kitchen/Bath Industry Show in Chicago, April 11 - 13, for an undisclosed client. This is top secret stuff! Once the show has begun, I can post more about this mystery.

Thankfully, my part is over. I've been working (with some great friends & family) on this monster of a project for the past month. And I'm finally done! I learned lots of great lessons and, overall, had a wonderful time!

"Crafting with Jenni B" Cupcake Girlfriends Party Time!

Hello, Virginia Living Television fans! My mom, Jana, made a special trip out to Virginia to be a guest on "Crafting with Jenni B." We were so glad to have her! We wanted to share with our viewers some of our favorite things to do together. One, of course, is crafting and the other is getting together with our girlfriends for a good time!

Cupcakes were our theme, as you can tell! We shared two crafts on the air and also wanted to provide some instructions in case you missed it!

Cupcake Party Aprons

Canvas Apron
Fabric Pen in Brown
Ruler
Double Stick Tape
Word Processor
Printer
Paper
Sponge Paintbrush
Acrylic Paint in Brown
Colorful fabric, ¼ yard
Ribbon and/or ric rac
Hot glue gun
Glue gun sticks
Scissors
Pencil
Bling to decorate with like buttons/rhinestones

One of the fun things about this apron is that it doesn’t have to be an apron at all. In fact, it doesn’t even need to be decorated with cupcakes. Use these same techniques on canvas totes & purses. Different colors & embellishments will bring out your creativity!

First, you’ll want to decide on your theme. Anyone that knows me also knows that I love cupcakes. So naturally, I went with a cupcake theme on this Crafting With Jenni B episode!

Decide which words or saying you’d like to print across the bottom. Print it out on your computer. I made my letters about 4” high. Cut them out and tape them together into a long strip if necessary. Make sure they’ll fit across the bottom of the apron! Find the center of the words by folding the strip in half from side to side.

Find the center of the apron by folding it in half from side to side and make a small crease in the fabric on the fold. This way you can line the wording up exactly in the center. Put your words behind the apron and secure with tape (double sided works easiest). Trace the letters in pencil before you fill them in with the fabric marker to ensure the wording looks how you’d like it to.

Make your cupcake for the apron next. Draw a pattern on some lined paper for the cupcake bottom. I just made a trapeze shape. Then make a pattern on some paper for the cupcake icing. Make it as big and as fluffy as you’d like!

When your patterns are made, take the cupcake cup and outline it on the apron making sure it’s centered (use the same technique as you did for the wording). Outline it with pencil before filling it in with the brown fabric marker. You can even apply acrylic paint with a sponge brush (just make sure you mix it with a medium so it can be washed – the medium can be found in the same section of the craft store as the acrylic paint).

Once the cup of the cupcake has dried, you’re ready to add the “icing”! Trace the icing pattern on to the fabric of your choice. I liked the bright green fabric with pink dots that resemble sprinkles. Cut out the fabric and place it on your cupcake cup to get the alignment correct. Apply it with fabric glue and let dry.

Now for the fun part – adding embellishments. I like coordinating ric rac and ribbon. All you need to do is use your glue gun to put small dots on the apron and then immediately place the ribbon over it. I actually placed a row of ric rac on the cupcake cup and added a flower button and a rhinestone. I put some rhinestones on some of the polka dots on the cupcake as well.

And you’re all done! Enjoy.

Cupcake Party Placemats

Large piece of paper or tissue paper
Pink scrapbook paper
Brown paper from a paper bag or packing material
Ruler
Hot glue/sticks
Double-stick tape
Ribbon or ric rac for embellishment
Pencil
Scissors

Draw a pattern for your cupcake bottom on the large piece of paper or tissue paper. Use a ruler as necessary. We made our bottoms about 8” high and 10” across at the widest point. Then draw a pattern for your icing.

Trace around the pattern for your icing and the cup and then cut them out. Make more than one if you’d like to! I got two cupcake tops from one piece of 12” x 12” scrapbook paper.

Next you’re going to add your embellishment to the cupcake bottom. We used a brown ribbon with a little bit of pink, but you could use ric rac as well. Just make sure it isn’t too bulky so your plate will lie flat when you put it on your placemat! Apply it with some hot glue or craft glue. You don’t have to go to the very top edge of the cupcake bottom because the cupcake top will cover it!

Place double-stick tape along the top edge of the front of the cupcake bottom. Press the cupcake top on.
You’re ready to use your placemat for your very own Girlfriends Party!

The Martha Stewart Show Experience

Virginia Living TV's "Crafting with Jenni B"

On the first episode of "Crafting with Jenni B", my host, Tammy Barboza, and I made a fun Springtime Tree and darling Faux Springtime Candy Truffles. As promised, the directions are below. Please do respond and/or send pictures of your version of the tree and treats. We'd love to see them!

Springtime Display Tree
This unique and fun-to-make tree brings a little of the outdoors inside. Decorate it with small, lightweight ornaments such as the Faux Springtime Candy Truffles (shown below).

Supplies you’ll need:

7 – 8 Small branches and twigs cut from trees (small leaves or sprouts add extra personality)
White spray paint
Plaster of Paris
Water
Mixing container
A terra cotta pot to anchor the branches into
Acrylic paint in your choice of color
Sponge brush
Easter grass

Once you’ve selected and cut your branches/twigs from trees, spray paint them white. Let them dry completely.

While you are letting the twigs dry, apply a few coats of acrylic paint to the terra cotta pot with a sponge brush. Cover it completely. Don’t worry about painting all of the inside because you won’t be seeing most of the inside. Just make sure you get the upper inside rim. Let your pot dry completely.

Once your branches and pot are both dry, try arranging the branches in the pot. Make them look fairly natural. Once you have the set-up, you’re ready to mix the plaster. The plaster will help the branches stay in place exactly how you want them. Make sure you plug the hole in the bottom of your pot so the plaster doesn’t go through before you begin mixing.

By following the directions on your Plaster of Paris container (usually one part water to two parts plaster), mix the plaster. It should be pretty thin but will set up fast. Holding the branches with one hand, pour the plaster into your pot with the other. Mix more plaster if needed to fill the pot. Hold the branches in place for about ten minutes in the pot or until they can stand on their own.

When the plaster is dry (it only takes a couple of hours), cover the top of the pot with Easter grass to hide the white plaster.

Now you’re ready to decorate your Springtime Tree!

Faux Springtime Candy Truffle Ornaments
These little cuties are perfect displayed on the Springtime Display Tree or on a nice white tree. They can even be made into place card holders or refrigerator magnets. Just use your imagination!

Supplies you’ll need:

Crayola Model Magic (or other air-dry clay)
Wax paper
Acrylic paint in pastel colors
Paintbrush
3-D paint in pastel colors
Small beads in pastel colors
Clear glitter
Fishing line
Needle
Candle
Needle nosed pliers
Small foil and/or paper candy cups

Take small amounts of air-drying clay and mold them into candy shapes like domes, squares, and balls. Take into account the size of the candy cups you’ll eventually be putting them into. Make as many candy forms as you wish.

Once you’ve molded your candy, let it dry over night. When you begin painting it (don’t paint them all if you want some to remain white) with the acrylic paints, they don’t have to be completely dry. They should just be dry enough that they don’t lose their shapes as you paint and decorate them.

Now you’re ready to embellish them! Make swirls of color and add the beads and glitter as desired. You can get inspiration by looking at the chocolate candy in your local sweet shop. Just be creative! This is where you can have a lot of fun.

Before moving on, make sure your candies are completely dry. Another overnight wait should be good enough. If you would like to hang your treats, you can thread the fishing line through the candy. Do this by sticking a needle through the candy, from side to side. Then slide your line through the hole the needle made. Sometimes it works a little easier if you lick the end of the fishing line before pushing it through. Once the line is through just take the ends and melt them over a candle flame. Clamp them with the pliers to secure the joint. You’re ready to place them in the candy cup!

If you aren’t making the truffles into ornaments, just place them in the candy cup and skip the process with the fishing line. To secure the candy in their cups, just add some hot glue to the bottom of the candy and then firmly press it into the cup.

Make sure you tell your guests that these yummy little treats aren’t real because they’ll probably want to take a bite!

Spring is Coming Early!

Okay, so it may still be freezing outside but I still want Spring to come early! I've been cooking up some new Springy items in hopes that the weather would cooperate. Check out some of the latest!

This is just a small variety of some of my springtime items.

I still can't get over the mini cupcakes. I've added glass glitter
to this one to resemble sugar. Then I couldn't help but put it on
a tree. Now I have a cupcake tree for Spring!
I sort of hope nobody buys these so I can use them all season. :)
Actually, one of my favorite things about this item is that it's
so versatile. It's a place card holder, it's a picture holder,
it's an ornament! Plus, if you use them as place card holders at your
bridal or baby shower, you can also use them as favors.
The guests can just take them home and use them to hold their own pictures!

Wouldn't these be the cutest thing sitting at
each place of your next Spring gathering? Yes!!

Ever wonder what my studio looks like? Well, here it is! Half of
it, anyway. I had to take a picture since it was so clean. I have
to admit, this is probably my favorite room in the house. I got
to design it as well as the adjoining bathroom to my own
specifications. It was fun! I love having my very own space to work in.

New Year = New Opportunities

So much has happened since the last time I've posted...where to begin?

On December 7 I was on LIVE National Television with Martha Stewart herself, making faux tart Christmas tree ornaments. It was truly an experience! Martha was kind and warm for the few minutes I saw here as we were making our treats.

It all started back in October when a producer of the show contacted me through my little Etsy shop. A couple of months, sleepless nights, and overnighted newly developed ideas later, I was in New York City with my mom and in-laws enjoying a new adventure. Being on live television wasn't the most pleasant experience but all the adrenaline made me sort of numb so I was able to perform. Click here to see my Martha Stewart Show footage!

I was only in New York for 2 days and it all seems like a dream now. My mom fulfilled her life long dream of seeing the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree and seeing Central Park in the snow. New York City truly is a magical place during the holiday season! Twinkling lights, millions (literally) of shoppers, cold air, and high spirits.

When I returned, it was so much fun to see all of the orders for faux food that were coming in. My mom and I worked day and night for a week solid to get all of the orders in the mail. It was great fun!

After seeing an article in the paper with a picture of me with some of faux treats, I got a call from a local public television station. The man calling thought my desserts were real and wanted me to host a cooking show! After meeting with him and explaining to him that I wasn't exactly the best chef, he offered me my very own crafting show. It will only air once a month at this point in three counties, but I am extremely excited about it.

Because this is my first attempt at a blog, I sure hope you enjoy it! I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to post here, but I think I'll keep you updated on my creations. Currently, I am making pedestal plates from vintage components. I have posted a sample of some of my creations. As you can see, I like making artificial food as well! It's been a couple of months since I've tried my hand at this so I hope I'll still have the artistic touch I had before!
